T2 Coil overs

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Dave Chesterton, Jul 18, 2020.

  1. Hi

I’m trying to sort out the front suspension on a T2. She has been lowered but now the tyres rub on the wheel arch and I have discovered there is only 25mm of travel in the shock absorbers. Hence the banging. It has been suggested by members coil overs is the way to go.

what I would like to know is what poundage springs I should fit.

Hi Dave, there’s a rather good thread about this lowering malarkey over on The prototype bay forum, I think it’s titled something like
For the attention of lowering gurus or similar another is the gaz shock thread. Have a little read and it just about sums up 99.99% of options available.

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,, I’m gonna get back to stock as soon as :)

Nothing short of solid rubber blocks will catch the wheel in 25mm. Can you raise it up a bit?

  6. Yes. That’s why I’m fitting coil overs to bring her up maybe 2” a member suggested 140Lbs springs ?

Sorry, no idea about suitable springs.

I use 140lbs springs, maybe I’m that member? :) 140lbs works for me but I only wanted to slightly stiffen the suspension not raise it significantly. If you want to raise it 2” you might need more than 140lbs, but springs are cheap, start low and work up.

  9. Yes it was you. How comfy is the ride.

  10. Where are you bolting the coil overs ?

A coilover ride is much harder than stock but much lighter than running on the bump stops and wheel arches, and shock absorber mechanical endstops..

  12. Same place as the shock absorbers

  13. We hope so. It’s not nice. I don’t know how the previous owner Put up with it.

Coil overs will assist your spring leaves to a minor degree and will stiffen your suspension slightly but I really doubt that they’ll help you lift it by two inches no matter what spring strength you have. I run 150s at nine or ten inch on mine but with slightly smaller tyres to give me that little more clearance/ suspension. The ride is OK, but I won’t say great and I don’t have any rubbing. I’d really doubt if there is more than a half inch of height adjustments available even though it looks like you have two and a half inches of threaded adjustments on the shocks. And finally, I wouldn’t want to go much stronger than these just because these are attached to a stud on the bottom and the shock towers at the top, fine for occasional use as shocks but not for continuous use as suspension as well as for the shocks function, I think they’d be a tad over stressed and wouldn’t want to find out where the breaking point might be.:)

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,sorry to be such a damp squib :theforce:

Mine lift one inch. But there are no bump stops or bump stop supports so it is still just possible to rub on a hard corner.
If it still has bump stops then you still have trouble.

I don’t like the floaty ride of the standard setup and I wanted to stiffen the suspension, 140lbs springs together with adjustable dampers does what I wanted but inevitably the ride is harsher.

If you want the soft comfy ride of the standard setup you need to keep the suspension standard. Lowering and then using coil-overs to raise it again doesn’t make sense to me.
