I have been able to catch 20W/50 before it got into the drains, it was running so slowly at -3 C .
But the engine still cranked and started OK..

The last person having major cranking issues on here , even after doing a lot of checks and fitting a high output starter turned out to have a siezed engine.
Can you turn it over with a spanner on the crank pulley or is it stiff ? There should be varying resistance as you turn the crank because of compression in the cylinders but it should move smoothly and not stick.

  2. Thanks All
Changed the oil out for 20W50 and it is running much happier now, a bit of fettling with the idle speed afterwards stopped the stalling.
I think the issue is being exacerbated a bit by the throttle mechanism which I think also needs some fettling, the pin that pulls on the linkage moves about 5mm before it connects, which equates to the pedal being about 40% of the way through it's travel before it does anything, which obviously is not great, looks a pretty easy fix though ( !!!I know I'm going to regret saying that!!)

It should be fairly straightforward to undo the clamping screw and pull on the throttle cable to tighten it.
Just remember when you first look at it with the choke heater cold, the throttle fast idle setting screw (at the back pointing forward) should be resting on a step on the choke cam, you will have to make sure that the screw is just not touching the cam with the choke cam lifted right up when you adjust the throttle cable tension.
If you set up with the choke and fast idle on, then the throttle may return to some high RPM that varies with how you stamp on the throttle..
Just make sure the choke is not opening the throttle when you adjust.

Its harder with a progressive as the fast idle mechanism is totally invisible, so you dont notice it is lifting the throttle arm very slightly as you set the throttle cable tension.

  4. Thanks and noted, it has still taken a bit of further adjustment and fiddling with the idle setting, but it seems good now!
