After some advice. When I bought my van was empty no interior. I have managed to get a Devon interior with a rock.and roll bed but the units are knackered. Not a problem for me as I am a carpenter by trade. I have bought some birch ply and was going to copy the units and make my own. I have 18mm birch ply but am now considering the weight this may add to the van. Really want to get some sort of interior in my van so can use again even if it temporary until I source something better. Looking for inspiration! Thanks
I did similar with 12mm years ago but there’s more choice now of better materials for camper conversions. Some of it is eye popping expensive though. https://camperinteriors.co.uk/
To expand a little. A lot of retail interiors seem to be made of lightweight "furniture board". Mine is and mostly it's faired well, but in a few places eg the worktop the covering bubbled up in the sun's heat. I made my RR wood parts from birch ply though IIRC 1/2". If I had a 1600 engine I might not worry too much as I camp solo but if I was camping with a family I'd need all the weight reduction I could get IMO. Then again, Westfalia made their interiors of of heavy duty materials so who knows?
I built one interior from 18mm birch ply and it was heavy…. I sold it on and made some tweaks to the design. I rebuilt using Morland lightwieght furniture ply and it has faired very well. The only issue might be having to buy it in 5 or more sheets. Morland is a slightly cheaper alternative to Vohringer ply. Both are quite resistant… I picked up Morland samples off a guy at Brighton Breeze who had been there all day in the rain with the little 15cm samples soaked all day!!
I built mine out of 15mm lightweight ply. I got lucky as I found Evo Design were only 20 minutes from me over in Wareham so I could go over, look through all their samples and then pickup the ply directly from them (it just fits in the back of an empty bay!)
Or ask the fellow in Scotland that is possibly breaking his van with the excellent condition westy Malaga interior @Carryoncampers
its so long ago i can't really remember, but the bed is made from heavier stuff (needs to be strong) but everything else is thinner/ lightweight but all covered in the same laminate so it looks the same. @Pdjordy if you're a chippy i expect you can probably source some materials from someone you know? i'd guess most suppliers would be able to recommend something if you tell them what its going in to? tbh don't get to hung up on building out a fully fitted kitchen in there - mine just has a full width R&R bed (original westy hinges ftw) and i have a rear facing seat with a flip up seat for storage, plus a table i can have set up inside or outside the van. we bbq/ fire pit cook / portable stove etc outside the van pretty much all the time we camp - if its cr8appy weather then fish and chips / take out / eat in the pub / go home etc are all good alternatives top tip - build just what you need to get camping (ie a bed) then start using it - once you've camped a few times you'll have a good idea what additional you need to make.
