Swiss cheese and filler

  1. First post to the forum and its probally in the wrong place but here we go

So it seems iv biten the bug yet again!
Over the years iv had a good collection of beetles to splittys and a few early bays, personaly iv always prefured the bays over the splitts
So when i was looking for another restoration project, it was obvious i had to find another bay window, but it had to be tax exempt was my rule,
So after a few months of scanning the papers and web
I found one that was sutable (cheap)

On the cover she looks ok, but obviosly has had new front panle and steps put in some years ago and needs to be done correctly this time, same with rear corners both rear arches and the out sills need redoing
As who ever done her last time only tacked the sills inplace and covered them in a cm thick body filler.

    Now the roof,
    This is interesting
(Pics to follow as on my phone right now and need to resize pics)
The roof allong the edges where it sits on the inner support has rusted all the way round the van, and looks really frehtening at first,
So yesterday i got stuck in and started cutting back the sides of the roof to expose the inner frame so i could see what i was working with,
And to my surprise i find she has had a roof transplant at some point in her life. A really bad one at that
As oll they done was cutt the roof level with the inner supporting frame and then stuck the new panle down on top,

So what has happened is that the old original roof has rusted through the newer section also
But to my surprise the inner frame is still very sound and strong, and only two holes about the size of a twenty pence peace
But so far so good i think,
Just got to wait and see what the fro t brings above the doors and sliding door today

Has anybody ever done a roof swap before? As cant see how the panle joins at the very front above the window
    As there is no gutter,
So does the roof fold over into the window frame and welded to that lip there,

Would be great if sombody could give me a heads up in thst area
Before i actually hit it in a few hours

    Thanks
