Suspension Upgrade - Advice

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Glenny500, Aug 29, 2018.

  1. 2018 winter project is going to be improving the ride a little (if possible). Do not really want to lower the bus but looking at the shocks and anti roll bar they look like they have seen better days. Also the back looks like one side is slightly lower and measuring the shocks with the wheels on flat ground they seem not to be the same

Also currently bump stops probably need replacing as well.

Is it best to just go for the full kit from someone like JK with the heavy duty anti roll bars, or is there a better option available?

Want the ride to be comfortable and plan on towing trailer, etc camping so regular use

Any advice / experience of what do to / what not to do.

  2. Buy a tired Citroên XM and transplant the whole lot.

  3. Gaz do an upgrade shock kit for the bay standard hight, don’t think the prices were too bad

Adjust the rear torsion bar settings to level it up.
Check the rubber donuts in the rear suspension - if they wear out the suspension can go crooked. They are cheap enough to change anyway when you have the suspension apart to adjust the ride height.

I've used kyb gas-a-just shocks (they arent adjustable ) on the rear,
and kyb excel-g shocks on the front for over 10 years now.
We do load the Westy, which is a heavy bus to start with, and the ride is comfortable and feels safe. Like yours there is a front mounted spare and we also use the roof rack which is also on the front.
Apart from these, everything else is standard. It all works well as such:thumbsup:
