Supermarkets are naughty aren't they?

I was in my local Waitrose this evening, and fancied some new potatoes. I picked up a bag from their "Essential" range. i.e. cheap. Then I noticed they were the same price/kg as the Duchy Organic ones. You have to have your eye on the ball in Waitrose.

In Sainsbury's the other day I nearly bought the crap bloated with water for poor people bacon, then noticed there was dry cured for LESS/kg.

What with the myriad of incomparable deals for phones, elec, gas, insurance etc I have to say if you're minding the pennies it's a full time job nowadays.

Just thought I'd mention that for the benefit of the young'uns on here who won't remember the days when there was one provider for all these things and one price. The freedom from having to trawl around trying to compare different deals was worth paying for.

I can rarely be bothered, but for fun I got my mobile down to a tenner for 1,000 mins, unlimited txt. No doubt you can do this for elec etc too? But seriously - why do you have to fight for a reasonable price nowadays, I'm fed up with it. I'm not a natural "consumer". I can't wait to "drop out".

    Just thought I'd mention that...

    :)

  2. There nothing a like more than going food shopping on my own and finding the bargains
when the wife and kids come it costs me a small fortune

  3. Tricksters the lot of um ::)

  4. They are indeed, picking stuff up and giving me them puss in boots eyes
I must learn to say NO
If they didn't eat for alternate weeks i would have more cash to spend on the bus >:D

  6. Have to say that it's not just supermarkets!! Every business is trying to get that little edge which means more profits. And they think that little edge means they have to 'con' the customer. Why do they never think that perhaps maybe customer satisfaction might bring them loads more customers and therefore loadsa profit??

  7. I think, generally, there's too much choice (or at least folk think you need it). I hate it.

  8. if you can do your BIG SHOP the last week before the end of the month because the better deals are on then

  9.
  10. Wise words Zed. Most companies reply on the consumers being lazy and not shopping about. Car insurance for example. The renewal cost will always be higher as they assume that nobody can be arsed to shop about. Get a cheaper quote and ring them back and it's funny how cheap they can make it then. It strikes of dishonesty but i guess it's just business these days.

  11. biscuits, what a minefield, so much choice, so many special offers.
I like value for money, but how can you compare a value biscuit to a mcvities chocolate digestive.

  12. Food shopping takes me ages because I always have to work out the best deal on everything. You have to watch the 'essential' or 'value' against the top of the range as well. They had a pig farmer on TV a couple of years ago and basically anything with a red tractor symbol comes from UK farmers with the same standards - they just package and price it differently.

  13. Suoermarkets bring me out in a cold sweat, I hate going in them, But when I do i have to check weights/volumes against price, Watchdog do a thing about it every so often

  14. Not just supermarkets. I was offed legal protection insurance cover thingy the other day when insuring the camper
£29.99 said the young operative . NO thanks i replied , please hold while i talk to my superviser, 2 Minuit's later,
we can arrange legal cover for £4.99 how dose that sound, Like a complet rip off i said .

  15. Old habits die hard, when I earned a small wage always checked for the bargains, still do out of habit

Up here would be nice to have choice, just a Co-op , 2 hrs journey for a Tesco or LIDL while they pretty good overall,
I always look at the price per kg and do not believe the 2 for 1 or 3 for 2 offers sometimes buying singles works out cheaper?
How does that work , shifting ageing stock ??
The other one is always check the price of two smaller items against one big one, sometimes they are cheaper.

Waitrose used to sell their stuff off reduced with a good length before the dead by, unlike the others when it was only reduced on the day , and not much reduction either

  16. Doesn't really affect me, as I have all my stuff delivered from Fortnum's... :)

  18. it's not just supermarkets - all shops do it.

always best to check things before you add to the trolley and always check for offers and what those offers actually mean.

  19. And check what's behind the sign is what's actually on offer. If the sign says "3 for £10 on cooking sherry" but the bottles behind it say "Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1934" on the label... expect to be disappointed at the checkout.

  20. And check what's behind the sign is what's actually on offer. If the sign says "3 for £10 on a product But they are only £2 normally! - i have seen that before
