sump plug dripping after oil change

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by ianio, Jul 28, 2020.

  1. changed the oil. fought to crack the sump plug. tightened it up to proper man-guess-torque. and its dripping very slowly.

not sure i wanna go as tight s it was when i removed it.

so i bought a oil drain plug and washer of Justkampers.
    https://www.justkampers.com/n029701...0cc-2100cc-watercooled-1979-1992-diesels.html

and its the wrong one. this is the small drain plug on the removable plate on the sump. i have a much bigger drain plug (like i would expect to find on any motor) closer to the oil filter. but justkampers dont stock anything else .

    type 4 2lt in a 1978 bay.

    any suggestions.

  2. Umm...which one did you do up really tight? The strainer plate or the oil drain plug ?

Don't over tighten that nut! Lots of threads on this here. You can kill your engine if you go over the recommended 9 or 10 ftlb.

  5. not me. i removed the large oil drain plug with some major elbow action.

the drain plug in the strainer plate is still where it was put by someone else and i intend to leave it there.

the plug JK sent me is for the drainer plate plug (im guessing) as its smaller

  7. i removed bolt A in the above diag.

JK sell the smaller bolt B as a "drain plug"

Spot on. If B and its plate doesn't leak, never touch it. Ever. :)

  9. i remember when i was looking before the oil change you lot were getting twichy bum holes about the strainer replacement.

i now know that every time someone tries to remove an oil strainer, somewhere in the world a small cute kitten dies.

my haynes manual suggest replacing it every 6000 miles.

I bought my replacement sump plug A from Euro Car Parts

    333440181 Sump Plug Volkswagen Transporter 2.0 1977 £2.89

Hope that's what you are after.

I won't be changing mine. Oil and filter every 3000 and that's it. I'm not going to do vast mileage though.

  12. Did you put a coppeer crush washer on?

And just in case it's not been said enough... leave the strainer alone.. unless you want to spend a winter in a garage with a Bentley manual and a tablet permanently logged into this site....

The strainer nut is a special, not a bolt. There are two sizes of drain plug though. Maybe you got a plug for a type-1 strainer plate.

  14. The Haynes can be ignored on this one I reckon. I changed mine 7 years ago when we got the bus and I've not touched it since and to be honest as long as you do regular oil and filter changes I can't see as the strainer does much anyway. When I did mine it was pretty clean despite the oil looking a bit past it.

And I don't know if it's been mentioned but don't overtighten the nut.....

Two sizes of drain plugs (A) were fitted, M12X1.5 part number 171941550 or M14X1.5 part number N 0297012. The smaller one is more common.
The strainer nut (B) is not a drain plug.

  16. Was there anything wrong with the plug you took out?.. just put a new crush washer on that?

  17. As above there should be crush washer. If you try to reuse it it may not seal. You can sometimes revive a crush washer by sanding both sides on fine grit paper

If it's a solid copper or aluminium washer and not a Dowty seal you can perk them up by annealing them too.

  19. I used to put a tiny little bit of PTFE round my drain plug as well as the copper washer that would squash up nicely , not on the little 10mm ones you gotta go careful with them:)

I reuse them over and over until they look like part of the plug, I know I shouldn't though.
