Subaru heating box - where does yours live?

Discussion in 'Alternative engine in bus' started by Sick Boy, Mar 30, 2015.

  1. Anyone with a Subaru conversion - can you tell me where your heater box is sited? Mine is under the passenger seat in the spare wheel bay. (I have increased my tyre size so it no longer fits and I need to re-site it) Any suggestions where to put it? Thanks

Mines under the floor just behind the cab. It's crap!

  3. Not a Suburu but i built mine inside a "cool box" and it sits between the seats

  4. Why is it crap? Just asking because I have been really pleased with mine - pumps out loads of hot air and warms the cab like a modern car. Just don't know where to put it now the spare wheel is too big. (Also what was the bad feedback? @chrisgooner Thanks John

Mine gives off the equivalent heat of a fart in a lift!
    Maybe there's an airlock, I don't know.

  6. Did a bit of research on the net prior to having my scooby install. A lot of people said the air produced wasn't that hot. So I decided against as I have a propex on board anyway. Could be because places like fellows usually install them underneath the van?

  7. Thanks to you all for your helpful replies. Maybe going under the van is not the answer then for me.

  13. Thanks - I am thinking I may just take your advice and leave as it is...

I'm going to have a look at mine when I get it back; it sounds like it should be better than it is!

  15. Mine is in the same place as @Moons'. Once the engine has warmed up, it does the job nicely. I need to sort out the pipework behind the dash, but will do this when I take the dashboard out (which is the next job on my to-do list). I think part of the reason mine does its job properly is because:

    a) I have the front bellypan in place, which means that the airflow under the bus does not pass over the heater box and therefore have the cooling effect that it can have from the wind-chill.
    b) I used 15mm pipe insulation (the foam stuff) to lag the pipework running from the radiator forward to the heater box. This again reduces the heat losses from wind-chill.

Once I am sure that the pipework under the dash is all in place and leak-free, then the heating will work as it should. I will then be completely happy.

Haven't done any of that, still works a treat!

Were it not the fact that he's built like a brick sh1thouse and has sired offspring, I'd nominate that I'm simply more of a man than @Baysearcher !!

  17. Not a Subaru conversion sorry. But I am glad inside the belly pan seems to work well as this is where I am putting mine :)

  18. Just to finish this off - I have left it where it is and got a slightly smaller spare wheel (175 65 14) which will fit in the wheel well with the heater box and be big enough to cope if I get a puncture. If anybody wants a used 185 85 14 Matodor and is coming to Techenders they are welcome to it.
