Subaru Conversion Niggle

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by scoobyblue72, Sep 10, 2012.

  1. Just completed a Scooby conversion, which bar one small niggle is running extremely well (now cruising at 60-65 on motorway). I posted on here some time back regarding heating issues. At that time I had a Cossy Rad in the back end, up against the Scooby 2.2 and a Lotus box underside...to much heat! Have had the Fellows under rad conversion and heating issues are all sorted, van is running really well. However, as with the first set-up, when climbing a hill and getting to the top...I get a power crash. It's literally a milli sec where the ECU stops sending power/fuel. A few people had said 'vac lock' on the petrol tank. Been down this road and it's not this. I'm also told it might be a speed sensor issue, which I'm looking at now...any ideas...anyone?

  2. Ah, Scoobyblue 72! I had a good look at your bus when it was at Fellows. Looks well tidy, mate. Don't you mean 'now cruising at 80 to 85?' With the 091 gearbox, you're only ticking over at 4100 to 4200 rpm at that speed. 60 to 65 is the same as a standard VW aircooled engine, isn't it?

Nice rads I know. For the first week of having mine, I use to keep my eye fixed on the water temp gauge. But all works absolutley perfectly that I hardly glance at it nowadays. Fan comes on perfectly too - as you'd expect with any 'normal' water-cooled car.

My only idea with your problem is to ask Perry at Fellows. If he doesn't know, why not ask their only competitor in the UK, TSR. Failing that, I'd ask a Subaru specialist garage.

  4. Ah, my good friend, how are you? Ref the speed I've been taking it easy...only got her back on Thursday and still running in after a bottom end rebulid and the rad conversion...might have had a short blast at 80 on the way down!!! Me to, looking at temp and oil gauge...silly habit I know and I'm over it now. Perry is looking ta this for me, just trying to eliminate all just in case it isn't the speed sensor thing...Are there any more of us out here or are there just the two of us? Kind thanks for the Fellows recomendation...thse boys have done me proud!!!

  5. Where's the pics chap? I'd love a scooby conversion on my 72 crossover. How much did it cost for the instal kit? Did you use an RJES bellhousing or an adaptor plate?

  6. I'll do my best to get some pics up soon :D. Only got it back Thursday, spent all weekend at Busfest...forgot camera, so waiting for daughter to up-load all her pics!

  7. I have a Jpeg pic on my desktop...how do I load it onto my reply?

  8. Are you able to use the Scooby diagnostic socket at all? Perhaps you could hook up a laptop and see what all the sensors are reading at the point in time you get the drop in power...

I am not sure on the hardware required as I only know a little about the VAG-COM stuff, but post on a Subaru forum and you may get some luck...
