Stuck exhaust valve

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Skater 8, Aug 3, 2020.

  1. Single carb type 1 engibe.
No. 1 cylinder exhaust valve spring is prouder than the inlet valve and the rocker is resting on the spring retainer washer - you can see the shiny bit on the edge. The adjuster consequently does nothing so I guess the valve is stuck open? Compression test seems OK.
On the south coast of France. OK to drive home?
, guess I am just on 3 cylinders. Any tips appreciated.

  2. Sounds like the valve is receding into the head rather than being stuck open !

  4. Is that bad? OK to drive on?

  5. I wouldn't drive it back, if the valve seat drops out or the valve snaps you will need a new engine, @77 Westy might know someone that way to swap cylinder head ?

  6. As Mick says, not advisable to drive, especially all the way from southern France. How long before you need to head home? You could fit a new head in an afternoon if you've got basic tools with you.

Too far, you're unlikely to make it back.
Are you running it on gas? It's unusual for a type-1 to drop seats on petrol.

If you could be 100% sure the valve seat was still in place, you could take the pushrods out on that cylinder. But then you would kill the remainder of the engine as it struggles to push the bus.

If you havent got recovery insurance...

Find the equivalent of a Halfords, buy a jack, and tools.. Get JK/Heritage to courier down a new head.
Drop the engine , replace head.

  10. Have you undone the adjuster or has it just unscrewed?

Take rocker gear off just to double check your valve has moved..

  12. I undid the adjuster to set up the gap. Put it back in, but it's not doing anything

  13. I was just asking about adjuster as if it has unscrewed the push rod would get loose and catch on the end of the cup and push arm onto valve.. and look like what you've described..

Vintage Machine are very close 115 Avenue de l'Industrie, 34820 Teyran. https://vintage-machine.fr/

I use Auto Passion Chavanay http://www.byautopassion.com/ that’s 3 hours or more from Montpellier but it looks like there is a branch in Sarrians about 1½ hours away.

If you need parts don’t waste your time with JK or Heritage, there are plenty of suppliers in France. Serial Kombi https://www.serial-kombi.com/ or MECATECHNIC https://www.mecatechnic.com/en-GB/vw_classic_parts.asp would have what you need.

Both your exhaust valve adjusters are backed out. The inlet valve adjusters are set as you'd expect to find them.

It's very carbon dirty in there. .My guess is the head is toast, guides worn, exhaust seats on the move... Easy job really if you had the tools one lazy day.

  20. Thanks all.
Went to vintage machine in Montpellier - very helpful. They put empi shims under the rocker arm and retuned. Recommended a rebuild. Let's see how far we get!
