So previously after adjusting the throttle cable and tightening the x2 screws hold down the Solex 34 to the manifold… the engine idle definitely reduced sufficiently for me to be happyish. But I had a niggling doubt about the efficiency of the seal between the carb and the top of the manifold. I have a 5mm hard rubber spacer / gasset ( this was fitted to stop another intermittent issue with hot starting) which seemed to have actually worked. But I can hear the hiss of air ( probably being down in) and was proved out by spaying some carb cleaner by the joint and the revs then dropped. So if I take the carb off what gasket sealer /adhesive stuff can I use to get the thing to seal to the rubber gasket I have some Hylomar Blue ( non setting) gasket sealer , shall I apply to top and btm sides of the rubber gasket? Is this the right /?best stuff to use . or is a bit of a leak normal and perhaps I should leave it ? I only used the Hylomar on the rocker cover inside faces normally. many comment welcome
Something, carb or the manifold is likely bent from over-tightening to try to cure the leak. Common problem.
Have a check that the rubber spacer hasn't been damaged with all the loose metal rattling around, or maybe it has split.. You could always make some thick gasket paper gaskets , one above, one below the spacer. Also check there isn't actually a vacuum takeoff on the carburettor or the manifold that is open (or even a split manifold boot) . Listen around with the end of a hose to one ear and poke the other end around.
Two or three gaskets under the carb and all smeared with hylomar WILL work - IF that`s the problem . (Through experience ! )
