Steering wheel resto

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Dave Franklin, Aug 30, 2020.

  1. Does anyone have any experience of a good steering wheel restorer?

My original has the usual cracks and chunks out of it.

Alternatively could s recommend an "new" one that matches the original late bay item?

    Many thanks

  4. They are pretty easy to restore. I use epoxy putty in the cracks etc, lightly sand to shape and key the old plastic, spray with plastic primer and then a couple of coats of paint.

  5. Yes this was my first go, used Milliput epoxy and a cheap dremel type cordless from Amazon to cut out the cracks, fill proud with the putty, sand back , high build primer , silk black then going to finish with silk lacquer from halfords

Agree with all the above, mine was a mess now looks like new. Also got a lovely Italian leather cover which makes the feel of the wheel lovely.

  8. Huyrob, what specific products did you use for your wheel?

That leather cover looks so much better than my Ebay purchase....was it made by an old shoemaker in Naples, or can they be purchased?

I used U-Pol filler bought from a local trade supplier, then a spot putty called Pronto for the small pin holes. Primed with a grey filler/ primer ( 3 coats) and, after a gentle rub down with very fine wet and dry ( the wheel not me ) finished with Halfords spray satin black and lacquer as Milosteel ^
The leather cover was from eBay seller name was Custom Steering. He advertises for a T 2 but I sent him measurement for outside diameter and rim circumference. ( 45cm and 7cm) It fitted perfectly, came with needle and twine. Very easy to sew on following his video. Cost was about £30 inc.
