Steering coupling for a 78 bay

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by fritt, Dec 31, 2011.

  1. Anyone know where I can buy, in the UK, a genuine steering coupling for a 78 Bay? VWH site says they stock them but oops they aren't in stock after sending a repro and charging me for a genuine. >:D

  2. Try (amazingly) JK. The one they sent me was an OEM part.

  3. Dare I risk it? Though to be fair the they do not appear to be stocking the same repro rubbish that I had the misfortune to buy last time. If the picture is to be believed it could possibly be a little more robust than its predecessor.

  4. This is all very confusing ....just looked at one on the Cool air site, possibly could have been made within the EU judging by the company name posted over the picture and also looks like a better copy of the same thing currently advertised on JK for half the price. Half price half quality?

  5. i found prices vary and costs massively ..... check gsf but i think i got mine from custom and comercial its a veewib one and is decent quality and relativey well priced

  6. Thanks I'll look them up :)

Sadly expecting cost to mirror quality went out of fashion decades ago. Sometimes we're left in the dark comparing a cheap but good part to a crap expensive one depending on who you're dealing with. And they are like supermarkets - draw you in with a cheap qood quality part then send a load of trash. It's a jolly old nightmare.

  8. First time I've seen a product prominently labelled "German quality" and just faintly visible in the photo the trade mark of a Far East manufacturing group.

"German quality" is completely meaningless if you think about it. Companies often offer sevearl choices. Quite often the GQ version is more expensive and lower quality than the "repro" option, but one never knows until you get your hands on it.

  10. Quite so. One wonders whether a company based in Jianxi Province PRC would know exactly what German quality is supposed to mean other than some retailers tag their product with it. I did tell VWH that the repro version was rubbish since it matched exactly the same article, complete with VW part number, that I'd had the misfortune to buy from JK 14 months or so ago. However I notice JK don't sell that one anymore their latest offering actually has "premium quality" embossed on it...another meaningless statement.
Keep telling myself not to get wound up about it but at what point does one trust a retail outlet?
    Sorry rant over.

  11. It truly is luck of the draw.

Only way is to buy something & return it if you don't like the look of it.
