Steering column top bearing removal. How ?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by 3901mick, Feb 17, 2013.

  1. How do you get the bearing out the top of the steering column. My inner column is moving so guess its this. I have the column apart but cant see anything holding it in, does it just pull out? Thanks

do you have the top hat collar ? if this is missing the column will move about, the colar goes between the column and the column bearing belwo the spring that sits under the steering wheel and around the column

  3. Mmmm I have seen no collar. The bearing does seem to have play in. I don't suppose you have a picture of the said collar. The one in the bentley book is different to mine, min is a 73 by the way

i think there are 2 types, this one

[IMG]and another where the column part is around 40mm long, may be able to get a picture later, but its a common fault as people dont refit it asumming it has no purpose :)

  5. Mine came in bits so its all a bit of a guess. I wish I had bought a van someone else hadn't taken apart. At least then I would have half an idea what goes where. Only half though :). Cheers for your help

so im 99% sure you need the little collar in the picture, if you click on the link i put up and scroll down its number 16 and only £5 :)

  9. Nice one Ta. I take it the spring then pushes it against the bearing ?

yes the spring pushes it down into the bearing, its a sprung steel collar with a taper so pushes against the column to centre it
