Steering box seals.

  1. Guys,

Anyone know where I can get replacement worm drive seal for my '76 RHD bus? Can't seem to find one and my box leaks bad.

I'm not sure if it's a serious leak, as the oil level below the seal is probably sufficient to keep the box lubed, (but let me know if this is not the case....)

    Many thanks.

  2. The worm shaft is a 22 X 32 x 7 and for good measure the output shaft seal is a 28 x 38 x 7 ( this is the one that usualy leaks).
I got mine from a bearing shop on eBay...can't recall which one but put that size in and it should throw up quite a few suppliers. Failing that your local bearing and seal supplier should recognise that size as its quite common.
You maybe okay for now as its leaking out but once the level drops the seal will begin to let in water and general crud.

  3. Great. Many thanks Fritt, I really needed to know that they are a common size. Cheers for that.

  4. I have a few pics of the internals .....just what the components look like.

  5. that would be great matey, if you dont mind. i was going to try to remove the seal with the box in situ. Don't know how hard it is to get the old one out with the shaft in the box....

If you're looking for a seal, they are "rotating shaft seals".

  7.
  8. All that lies between the steering coupling and the lower worm bearing....the seal being a press fit into the top plate.

  10. Thanks Guys, all a great help as usual. I'm now off to see the mad leprechaun at the local bearing supplies. Wish me luck!

I think it may be best to take the whole box out. A job for the winter.

  11. ...especialy as the drop arm will need a hydraulic puller to pursuede it to move. You can of course remove the box and drop arm in one piece through the chassis member before applying muscle.

Mine just popped right off with the first light turn on the splitter. I couldn't believe it having struggled with a fair few before. You never know your luck?

  13. on my advisery it said the box was leaking....may have to have a look
i have a bearing supplier less than a mile away. also a gsf. and a tool station and a screw fix..
it quiet a handy place to live..

if any one has the bearing number and seal part no's. i could see if they get them and let the price.. from hayley bearing man.

  15. Gave the leprechaun the bearing sizes and now have two new seals for £3!! (top seal is only 5mm not 7mm thick, but should make much difference as the oil doesnt 'rest' against it.

  16. Will be okay assuming its only a single lip seal. Just keeps water out and oil creepage in...in theory it should have spacer but its not exactly subject to high shaft speed stress :))
