Steering box leak

  1. Just discovered that my steering box is leaking, badly. I know it's a half-assed solution, but I'm thinking of packing with grease instead of replacing the seal, has anyone done this? If so, what type of grease did you use? Thanks.

  2. I wouldn't do it, myself. Changing the seal pretty straightforward, plenty of threads on here.

  3. They are designed so that any bits of metal sink out of harms way, using grease turns it into grinding paste

  4. ok, I'm convinced, thanks. I'll keep it topped up until I have the time/patience to replace the seals.

  5. You could stuff it with grease (although ZF who made it wouldn't want you to), but if you get any muck in there it'll grind the worms to bits. Better to bite the bullet and service the box.

  6. If you look at my recent threads I just refurbished mine along with a seal kit from Keith, really easy.

  7. Only difficulty I had was getting the drop arm off, which took a hydraulic puller and loads of whacking and heat. Came off with quite a bang. Seals are cheap though once you've got it apart.

Doubt he'd have done much better; he had an answer within 6 minutes!
