Steel Wheels 5.5x15 where?

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by bootsam, Jun 25, 2012.

  1. Where can I find these for sale? Ive loooked at loads of places, ie vw heritage etc and i am confused.

What is the benefit of going from 14" to 15"? Is it because tyres are more readily available for the 15"

I plan on lowering Percy but only 3 to 4" with a red9 beam and adjustable rear plates in the future. But with the possibility of going further down if and when i fancy but generally 3" would suffice. TBH its the rack and pinion on the red9 beam that appeals to me most, oh and the wishbones. You know where you are with rack and pinion and its generally in the lane your supposed to be in.

So can someone extol the benefits of 15"s to me (oooer missus). I dont plan on tubbing or anything like that.

Ive also read snippits about offsets. Please explain to this buffoon who is getting even more confused as he types.

    Ta.

  2. not sure on the 15inch wheels mate. But speak to Birdy about the Red9 beam. He has just installed one and will be able to run you through all the pro's and con's.

  3. You will use a lower profile tyre on a 15" wheel to give the same rolling radius as a 14" wheel.
This will give better cornering and stability as there will be less tyre roll. The ride will be firmer as you will no longer have the high bouncy tyres
If you fix all the worn joints and use a decent steering box there will be less gain converting to rack and pinion

  4. you can get 14 inch wheels rerimed to 15

  5. talk to Birdy as he's just fitted my Red9 kit. he's close to you too in Croydon and is a genius sorting out the myriad of little "oh bugger" problems that arise when fitting the Red9 kit. I went with Porsche 16" Fuch rims as I wanted to keep a Porsche theme going on as I had polished MWS Fuchs replica 5.5 x 15's originally. Rolling diameter is key as is the load rating on tyres - Lots of threads about that on here!

  6. Stu was looking after Percy for a while hoping to get Gary at C.A.R. to do my welding for me but his schedule is way to busy. I will bend Stu's ear once the day arrives and no doubt tempt him with some scooby snacks.

It goes into Ian Taylors on Saturday. My steep slope of despair begins. I envy you having near enough done your bus.

I'll ask about the wheels too. ta

i think danbury sell the steel wheels and tyres when they put alloys on the rusty busses from brasil.

Glad to read that battery tray is being sorted. It did worry me laying under there when I took a look over Percy

Just gutted for you that Gary couldn't have got him in and start the work sooner :( Always expect the unexpected with these buses.
