I thought I'd get Lenny out of the garage today, a bit of a clean and go for a drive. I keep the batteries charged up but it's not been started for a couple of months. I put the key in, started first turn as usual and backed out onto the drive. I left it running for a bit, the choke came off and then turned it off. After cleaning I went to start it and reached in and turned the key, it turned over but didn't quite catch. I repeated it and it was almost running and then died. I sat inside and tried again and nothing. Warning lights are on, fuel gauge works, lights/horn works but nothing from the starter, no clicks at all. My thoughts are starter/solenoid or ignition switch, has anyone got any ideas please. Type 1 1600 just about standard. Many thanks.
If it cranked and almost caught - may have needed to go to hot start foot down hard and crank to clear excess fuel. Nothing happens: Battery lead loose/corroded/earth strap, starter or ignition switch or both.
If I'd have sat inside I could have gave it some right foot but I reached in through the open window, my mistake. I have a quick look underneath and all wires(3) are on and tight. It's back in the garage now, Jack and axle stands out tomorrow.
After a good check round it looks like the ignition switch has err broken. All I have to do now is find a new one, all the usual suppliers have none.
@Meltman, JK seem to have the 74-79 in-stock. Not sure what your camper age is. https://www.justkampers.com/vw-t2-b...-on-vw-t2-bay-1974-1979-vw-t25-1979-1992.html If they don't have these in stock and it is the one you need, I might have one in the garage.
@Meltman Also in stock here: https://www.autodoc.co.uk/febi-bilstein/1883225 or https://www.amazon.co.uk/febi-bilstein-26652-ignition-switch/dp/B003NE2L6G
Thank you for the help. Mine is '73 and it has 7? wires attached as a small harness. I only need 6 wires and last time I had to cut one off and tape the end. I'll have a go at removing the switch and then be able to have a better look at the wires/connections.
The extra wire is just a connection for key-in buzzer or similar. It is possible to carefully dismantle an ignition switch and make it work again for a bit, provided you catch the springs and ball bearings and dont let them fire off into the distance. I had to do that when I bought a random wrong switch at GSF and then couldnt be bothered to take it back, but I still wanted to run the bus.
