Starting issues......help please....

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by dan H, Apr 17, 2017.

  1. Long story short, lost power in Friday and then a big miss fire on the A19 heading towards Hartlepool. Escorted off the A19 and home, starting to have a look thru what was the problem on Saturday/Sunday and today, first of all I noticed the points in the dizzy had snapped. (Not sure how) so replaced them expecting the van to start up, everything seem to work, but the van never fired up, so checked for power, there's power to the coil and electric pump so that's all rosy.

Checked thru these to work my way thru, changed the condenser and rotor arm over, didn't start.

Checked for loose ht leads, nothing,

Checked for fuel, there's fuel, still wouldn't start,

Changed coil, nothing, there's a few other things I've checked and still nothing.

Has anyone got any ideas please, as I'm totally stumped now

  2. Have you checked for compression, mine wouldn't start due to a dropped valve and loss of compression.

  3. Check the timing?

  4. No I havnt, not sure where to start with that to be honest, I'm mostly learning as things go wrong :)
I think the timings ok, it was before, not perfect, but certainly running. :)

Depends which way round you prefer to work, I'd start in the heart of the engine and work outwards, ie; do a compression test first then you know if the problem lies with pistons or valves and trying to keep starting it only makes things worse.
If comp ok then start investigating fuel and ign!

  6. I worked with my basic knowledge of the basics, I'll have a google on a how to compression test. See how that goes anything basic that I could test?

  7. Reset the points . Remove the spark plugs overnight .its loaded up. Let it air out ... Itl start in the morn.

  8. I like your optimism, I'll do that tomorrow and check after.

Nice problem = The points may have just worn out. And then you flooded it and keep on flooding it.

Bear in mind some back fires are down to valve issues, and the rubber boots on the inlet manifold can split from the backfire explosion causing lean mixture when you try to run the engine again.

Check for spark when you crank it - should make a fat spark from the end of a spark plug lead pulled off a plug to the metalwork on the engine.

If there is a spark and it stinks of petrol when you are turning it over, just keep your foot hard on the accelerator and turn over the engine for 30 seconds. DONT pump the accelerator. If nothing, wait ten minutes, try again.
Put the battery on charge if you can.
