Anyone seen the kit below which replaces the crank pulley nut to allow handle starting?? The point where the crank is engaging is a rotary inclined plane with a sort-of-a hook to it. If the handle it turning faster than the engine, it's engaged, if the engine rotates faster than the handle the engine bolt forces the handle out of engagement and you don't get hit. Traditional advice for using a starting handle is to avoid wrapping your thumb around the handle, as if the engine kicks back, you'll break it! If right handed, pull the handle upwards towards you http://youtu.be/O9zPw_VTl_A Another way to do it is as below, caution advised if trying either method!!! Just rummaging through my nuts and bolts box and found this, the starter dog from a Ford Pop. Insert starter handle and 2 pegs engage. Turn it clockwise. When the engine catches the handle disengages. As above, the main risk was if the engine kicked back briefly in an anticlockwise direction. Especially troublesome in winter.
He who LOLs last, they called me mad for suggesting this MAD I TELL YOU !!!!!!!! http://thelatebay.com/index.php?topic=17280.0
