Following Snottys advise re me screechy starter http://thelatebay.com/index.php?topic=17422.0 I whipped it out today, looked OK oiled it put it back, and.......no change, I have reviewed the evidence my Lord, It started suddenly after putting engine back in and out and in. Seems to be turning over slightly slower than normal With HT leads off turns engine over and disengages without noise (but slower) Only screeches for a second when engine fires. I have no experience of these symptoms but I am starting to think electrical
If you didnt remove the starter from the engine then I think electrics would be the issue. A bad connection could cause a slow turning starter - try removing the connections, cleaning them well and refitting, not sure where the screech would come from though...
I think its not disengaging - is the solonoid clicking on and off correctly. Is it definatley the starter motor squeeling, not a loose alternator belt?
Ive found this http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?2269482-DIY-Starter-Motor-Grind-Fix-and-Starter-Motor-Replacement The sound on the link sounds like mine, I don't know if it is my problem but if it is I might change the starter, Im not sure if the one on it is serviceable.
Sounds like the starter pinion is not disengaging from flywheel quick enough. Could be sticking solenoid or worn bearing. Are there any burrs on the pinion that could cause it to stick?
Ive just read that a starter from an auto, they remained the same from semi auto beetle through T25 I believe, will fit and you don't need the bush as it is self supporting the same as the new high torque offerings at heritage act, I have one on me spare 2L auto engine so if cleaning up the earths don't work I will bolt that up and see if she works
Not yet, Im going to take the auto starter of my spare engine tomorrow and bolt it up, its not the earth or connections, will report back tomorrow.
exactly wot mine is doing, AA fella says so , so me starter on bench........, thou AA fella says most likely solonoid nod disengaging ..we shall see....!
Put the auto high torque self supporting no bush jobbie on and it starts a treat, I reckon if I run out of petrol within a mile of home I could drive home on just the starter!!
