How much of a ball ache is it to change a starter motor on bus? I've got a type 1 engine. Bus starts alright on the drive but then if I stop it often don't start again without someone giving it a push. I'm guessing its the starter motor.
no hassle really mate ,a few wires and couple of bolts , keep it simple, are all the wires clean/secure? If yes , get underneath next time you have a no start situation and as a.n.other person turns the key(mind yourself in case it starts) place your finger against the solenoid casing and feel if its energising?
are you sure it is the starter motor that is the problem? does the starter motor turn the engine over but it doesnt start? could be you need a hot start relay fitted rather than a new starter, have a look at the link below.... http://thelatebay.com/index.php?threads/how-to-hot-start-relay.358/
it might be your ignition switch, you can test your starter to find out, look on the bright side at least you can bump it so it's only one of two things. Be thankful you haven't got an automatic lol
A hammer on starter motor worked last time. Bump starts ain't much good if you've only got a 7 year old with you lol. He can't reach the pedals
Next time, in neutral, bridge the spade and main connection on the starter with the end of a big screwdriver and see if it turns then. If it does, add a "hot start" relay - cost about £4. If it doesn't, but it spins nicely when it does work, the solenoid is buggered.
And if you fancy having a look for problem in and poss repair of solenoid go to "Natt"s Aircooled tech.com", good pic/text re strip /inspection / repair /rebuild of solenoid ,worth a look maybe .
Also check the earth strap on the back of the gearbox. Mine starts a lot better after cleaning the connections.
New starter motor on and it sounds amazing. Reckon the old one has been going for ages. Didn't cost much and a quick(ish) job to do (for woody)
