    Help!!
here's the story so far.... recently replaced a broken cv joint on my 75 panel van... second time out when i started the engine the starter motor stayed on, even after the key was removed.

Firstly, the starter motor was changed for a new unit.... the problem still persisted.

Second, i stripped the steering column to check the ignition switch.. the switch was cracked so, this too has been changed. i thought that this would be the answer to my problems...but... i fitted the new starter switch this morning and when i connected the battery the starter motor spins again!! For some reason the starter motor is staying on all the time

All the wiring looks ok, and whilst fitting the new starter motor all the connections were cleaned too.
There has been a hot start relay fitted (i think that's what it is, its wired to the starter )could this be at fault?

I'm lost as to what to do next, not to mention feeling a little bit fed up! can anyone shed some light onto what this might be please?

Thanks for reading this, hope you can help!:)

Disconnect the hot start relay and wire the starter up as per original, to begin with . See if it still stays engaged. If not its fixed , if yes disconnect the solenoid operating wire, now check what happens

  5. I would take a guess that the relays contacts have welded together.

Check the bush in the bell housing and the teeth on the starter and fly wheel and the bolts that hold the motor in are tight.
if the teeth are warn or damaged they and cant disengage the motor will hold on

Without the relay everything seems to be well, i'm going to run without it and see how that goes for a while.... All the wiring is good and clean, the starter motor and solenoid are new so i guess i shouldn't need it after all.
    :)

  8. This, I'd think. If the solenoid had an internal short, it could've welded the relay contacts.

  9. Yeah do this, If you get any problems with it not starting etc just pop a new relay on where the knackered one is :)
