Starter issues

  1. Hi all
I’m after a bit of advice please
My starters been iffy for a while , just clicking occasionally and needing a rock in reverse before it starts .
I’ve bought a new starter from GSF but it looks a little different
. I fitted it but nothing happened when tne key was turned , so I shorted it and it spins but didn’t engage .
When I removed it tne terminals on tne live from battery and loop out to ignition were both in bad condition and with a wiggle snapped off .
First job I guess is replace the two terminals - they are circular ones
Anyone know tne correct name ? And where I can get them from ?
Secondly is tne starter correct ?
    Thanks in advance
    Al

The starters are specific to gearbox/bell housing. Your starter may not be engaging with the flywheel if it’s not matched

You got the wrong starter but it sounds like your wiring needs attention too.

Ring terminals to fit the stud diameter for 6mm2 or 25mm2 wire, but you will have a game refitting them without either a big soldering set up, or a big crimp tool. Also the ends of the wires that fell out are probably corroded so will not crimp or solder properly without freshening up the ends of the wire (stripping back to fresher copper for crimping, using acid free soldering flux for soldering or using new cable)

The key dimensions on the starter are the diameter and length of the shaft and the distance the pinion sticks out and where the stop is on the shaft . Both the starters in your picture look compatible.
The drum on the old starter is a sprag clutch.. on the new one that clutch is probably still inside the starter body at rest. The solenoid pushes the pinion out to the stop and then powers the motor via a contactor between rhe two big terminals on the back of the solenoid.

If your wires were in the process of falling off it might be partly that which made your starter dodgy in the first place.
