I'm going to fit a 123 ignition distributor and spark plugs to my 1600 type 1 engine fitted with 36 drla dellorto carbs, what would you recommend setting the spark plug gap to? I think standard is 0.6mm is this right?
The 123 ignition system still pulses 12 volts through a transistor the same as the Pertronix/Accuspark units. No more energy available, they all saturate the core of the spark plug coil, so no change in gap. The only time you might increase the gap is using CDI systems or with a different coil , but as bus engines dont rev high, even points provide enough energy. You are paying (a lot) for timing accuracy.
I'd have thought as Mike says as coil makes the spark but 123 site says use manufactures plugs and spec but you can increase gap by 0.1 to 0.2 if you like! Sent from my SM-T580 using Tapatalk
^this. You could try opening them up a bit. With any electronic ignition system, you’re going to get better HT at the plugs. Worth a try.
I've set all mine to 0.6 with a new powerspark svda type dizzy and their matching electronic ignition. Funny thing - after taking out the PO-installed 009 dizzy I found what looks like a pertonix I module inside it. I couldn't really say for sure because the label had come off at some point and got shredded and 'distributed' around... at least I have a spare module now.
The 123 should give some other smile benefits - nice steady idle, as balances tbe spark and sets advance low for easier starting. When you're have it up and running, be interested to know if these features work.
Anyone heard back from VW Jim about the magical ‘spacer’? I haven’t. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
If anyone wants a measure of the spacer I have I'll get the caliper out and I'm sure someone will sell something to suit. Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk
