spark from cell phone ?

  1. Now this one is bothering me/puzzling me , question is , if I switched the gas bottle in bus on (13.5 kg) exited bus ,leaving cell phone adjacent to gas outlet ,sealed bus seams with say gaffer tape and walked a distance away and dialled aforementioned cell phone ,would a spark be produced so much so that gas would ignite ? or is that simply Hollywood movies guff? ta 4 advice

  2. I cant be party to an insurance fraud other wise i would say theres a good chance , ,,,, Gas + spark = bang

No when the phone rings in your pocket does it spark? Lol

  4. I'm with Ron here. A mobile has never set my trousers on fire.

  5. Only danger is for the same reason you're not allowed to use them on petrol forecourt - if you drop said phone, dislodge battery, possibility of minor arc and kaboom!
No spark when ringing though - unless phone faulty.

  6. And that is why i asked , does a mobile cause any spark? particularly one strong enough to ignite a gas filled bus? perhaps it does produce a small/tiny spark , i would think it cannot fire out a big fat juicy blue one , just curious ,as one is sometimes curious .c"mon ,you tellin " me it"s never crossed your mind ?(if no, assume you never watched "

Did not top gear try this with many phones in a caravan and nothing go bang ?

  8. No, phones are used in IEDs but they generally have their speaker wired to a detonator of some kind, the phone itself is most unlikely to cause any form of detonation/ignition

  9. Only if your cellphone has a spark-gap transmitter like Marconi had ;). Otherwise, it's complete guff.

  10. Does your phone look like this ;)?

Myth busters tried all sorts to get it work- couldn't
Now if you had one of them touch tasers .................!

  12. Of course, they ignore the huge spark from the starter motor when the solenoid kicks in, and from all of the unsealed relays / switches on a car. Surely torching a van just involves a loose fuel pipe in the engine bay .........

As I remember from top gear there was more chance of a spark from a chav in a shell suit than your phone

  14. I've always been dubious of the no phone rule on petrol forecourts <not that I'm so popular as to need to carry out a call while I diesel up> but in Asia everybody's on the phone while they fuel up!most of the time they leave their engine running while fuelling up aswell. Fairly sure Asia hasn't been blown up yet {through petrol station anarchy anyway}

  15. There's little to no risk at all. It's just a tradition, like maypole dancing.

  16. Thought as much. There was a particular fuel station I used a lot near Ipswich which had an above average amount of warnings etc displayed about the risks, including pictures of fuel station explosions "caused by mobile phones". I reckon it was all photoshopped.

  17. From the phone as a unit, no risk, but....
Try sticking a hole in a lithium ion battery and stand back. Well impressive! Do not attempt this at home, go tothe neighbours.

  18. I really wouldn't do that...

  19. A lot of crap surrounding mobiles. Travelling back and fore Aberdeen quite a lot, I've noticed BA now allow you to use your phone and don't ask you to switch off until the seatbelt sign goes off anymore.

  20. About time too, I'd think. Any plane who's avionics can be deranged by a text from your mum is one I don't want to fly in.

However, they do have to err on the side of caution, I s'pose...
