South Devon Recomendations please

  1. Hi all,

We are heading down for a lond weekend in South Devon next week. We plan on going to Totnes and maybe Bigbury-On-Sea.

We have a wonderful knack of missing good bits of an area. For example the time where we wandered round Nimes all day, sat down had coffee and were unaware there was an amphitheatre just behind us on the next road (we have since revisited and seen it).

Therefore, to be safe, does anyone have any "not to be missed" recommendations between Plymouth and Torquay?

    Thanks!

  3. The village of Torcross and the beach of Slapton sands is stunning and a big recommend of mine, actually the coast road between Dartmouth, Torcross and then the river road up to Kingsbridge and down to Bigbury is nice. Beware the hill road into Dartmouth, shes a killer even more so on the breaks going into town. Noss Mayo is worth a daytrip and so is Salcombe but avoid all the wealthy second homers and Chelsea weekenders. There's a little farm shop by Torcross called the Stokeley, they used to do Britstops and do a mean farmers cooked breakfast.

  4. I love the Greenway to Dittisham ferry, and the Anchorstone cafe at Dittisham is splendid (book now!). Both best accessed from the water, although Greenway quay car park would be an amazing photo shoot early or late when quiet

  5. Last time I drove the van round/though Salcombe we went to the NT property up on the hill, busy narrow roads, wouldn't go back.

  6. That's a point. I wouldn't fancy taking a van down to Bigbury.

  7. Come up to Eggesford and say hello to me . Pretty much the whole of the Devon coast is worth a visit. Head to North Devon if you want some really nice scenery.

The traffic jams on the A38 are a must visit when in Devon.

The steam railway from Paignton and down the Dart valley is quite fun, maybe stop off at Greenway to see the NT house where Agatha Christie lived (gain bonus points for not driving to the house, the NT prefers you not to need to use their carpark, I think theres a free coffee in it for you ) . Paignton Zoo was quite good - orangutans in big trees. Dartmouth Castle. Not very big but good views.
Use some of the ferries across the Dart, for amusement. Visit some of the shops both sides of the river near the railway terminus at Dartmouth. Look at the yots and yotties.

    I’m fro
Up Norff, but one of my favourite beaches there is Ness Beach in Teignmouth/Shaldon. You have to walk through a tunnel in the cliff to get to it - ace
