Hi all, I'm shortly to collect my fathers 72' type 2 Devon camper. It's been in the family 30 years. In 2002 it came off the road for some light repairs.......I had it and every time I touched an area it was worse than it looked, I replaced the rear corners, rear arches, sills inner, outer and strengthener, front wings, chassis outriggers, front panel, jacking points and the tops of the chassis rails around the engine. In 2003 it then went back to my Dad who had all the rubbers replaced, some of the glass and it was given a full respray in the original candy white, it was then MOT'd and driven home. He then put it in the garage intending on putting the interior that I had removed for safety while welding back in and getting it back on the road. Fast forward to the present day and it still hasn't moved He's nearly 70 now and they are planning on downsizing so I have managed to persuade him now is the time for me to finish it off and bring it back to life. Here starts the tale.....haven't even seen it in over a decade but going over to try and free the brakes and get some air in the tyres on the 2nd.... I'm sure I'll have lots of questions to ask from then on....
Pictures will follow on Saturday when I lay eyes on the old girl for the first time in over a decade......
Good luck. Sounds exciting. Looking forward to seeing some photos. I did a similar thing with my dad's old beetle about two years ago. I've used it every day since.
Regards the paint and repairs - I'm expecting some light corrosion but nothing much else. The gauge of the metal was heavy that went back into her, all the parts were sourced from Alan Scholfield. I heavily under sealed etc so if anything it will be stuff that has come through the panels from the inside where the welding had left untreated metal. When it was given back to him the painters advice was to seam seal all the internals ( rear wings, corners etc )......
