27mm I think. Measure across the flats. ;)

  3. Took mine off yesterday, sure I used a 23mm socket. (Mines a 1979)

  6. As I recall (long time ago), it's an odd size I didn't have - had to use an Imperial one. Easy enough to whip the horn button off and measure.

  7. The socket size for my 79 bay is 24mm just in case anyone needs to know for future reference and all that. The problem I got now is I can't undo the sucker....it's on tighter than a....

Any ideas on how to get the nut undone?

Its not undoing the nut that will be the problem, its will be getting the wheel off.

leave the nuts a few turns on so when you pull the wheel off it doesn't smack you in the face/body.

and if it's really tight get a kettle of boiling water on it

  11. If it's a 79, the wheel won't be on a taper, so should just pull straight off.

  12. Make sure you have the steering dead straight and/or mark the position on the splines or you'll be cursing driving off with the wheel at a funny angle.

Also watch the spring under the wheel when removed...

  14. Yay 16" breaker bar FTW....... I had to buy one mind you.
Thanks for your help so far but need some more now....
I've removed the steering wheel and I need to remove the indicator stalks to fit a new 2 piece ignition/steering cowling. Any advice re: removing the stalks etc would be appreciated ta

  15. Glad you got your wheel off - the later ones are easy. Sticking it back on, the nut's only done up to about 35 ft/lbs as I recall - it's not going to come off.

Switches/cowl is easy too, although you'll have to take the whole black outer column off, as the plastic bits are screwed to it. You can't get them off outer wise. From memory:
    - disconnect batt -ve, or sparks may fly
    - grab the sections of wiring harness under the cowl, one on each side, and wiggle the two switch connectors downwards. They just unplug from the bottom.
    - undo the four (you're missing one) small bolts visible in the pic. You should now be able to pull the two switches out. The wiring runs down in "combs" that plug into the connectors at the bottom. There may be small spacers that can get lost.
    - unbend the tabs that hold the wiring harness under the dash
    - undo the two bolts holding the outer column bracket under the dash. Reach up towards the windscreen under the dash and undo the single smaller bolt that holds the front of the column bracket to the front panel.
    - undo the column baseplate.
    - the whole outer column should now flop down towards you, so you can (maybe) pull it off the inner steering column. If it doesn't come, undo the two bolts holding the inner column to the steering flex-joint at the base.

Sounds hassle, but it's easy-peasy. Good opportunity to check the horn binding wire at the column base and give the switches a good clean up.

  16. Cheers snotty many thanks for that. I was a bit worried if I went into it with out asking advice, things would start pinging off all over the place.
    Cheers

  18. *** depressurize (remove cap) the screen wash***

If you take the pipes off the squirter (if its on your stalk rather than button on the dash), you may get a lap/face full of water :)
