So what's a proper restoration then ?

I usually think a full resto is a full respray with everthing sorted beneath the paint and then everything mechanically sorted as well, but not necersarily every nut and bolt replaced. That's my definition and what I'm working towards with my van. If it's a usable vehicle you're after, properly sorted bodywork is essential so it can develop its own 'patina' while not actually deteriorating / rust coming through / filler falling out etc. Mechanicals can be 'sorted' without taking off and replacing every nut and bolt, which is also a bit pointless unless the van is going to be kept pristine in a garage.

It's an interesting debate though, I've got a '71 panel van which needs a new roof, both rear corners, front panel and the usual sills/outriggers etc. Is it still a van in it's own right or a replica? or what about the vw38 that was found in lithuania a few years ago? that was missing the floor pan, engine,gearbox, all the running gear, all the interior. it was basically just the shell without the wings, the doors,the boot lid and bonnet. It's been beautifully restored with mostly correct parts, but that doesn't change the fact that most of the car is not original.
I may the very roof.

I have a converted panel van shell. And I mean shell - stripped to the bone.
Make me a fair offer and it's yours. I'll get some pics today. It's had a fire at the back, but not much damage up in the roof. The skin itself is good and if you wanted all the structure and top of the pillars it would be good for that as well.

Shell has wheels but that's your lot. It would suit me to get rid in one piece.
