so what pipes are missing and what was the fan for?

  1. here's the engine bay looking a bit sorry for itself. it runs lovely but looks a mess :) there's quite a few pipes missing by the looks of it. there's a big fan in the middle that i have no idea where it should connect to...
is there any diagrams on tinternet that could show me what's what??

the fan isnt wired up to anything....

the fan is for the heater blower - it should be connected to the (middle) heater lever' micro switch, which powers it when pressed down.

you have two pipes missing that connect to the top flange on the heat exchangers - VW Heritage sell the two pipes (one is different to the other).

to the right and left of your engine are 2 holes on the tinware with an upstand sticking out, one oval ish the other round, the fan has a pipe to each hole, however if the fan doesnt work its not worth connecting it

  4. Cheers guys! so those holes that the fan blows down, they go to the cabin?? is it safe to take air from an engine bay and pump it into the cabin??? I would have thought the fan would have drawn in cool air form somewhere?

  5. Yes, the fan will blow the air over the heat exchangers and then up through the center pipe to the cab. You can see it quite well on one of the pictures related to this matter on ( http://www.ratwell.com/). I've looked it over several times while sorting mine out. The center lever on the dash (red) heater lever, when pulled all the way down, will start the fan to force the air "toward' the cab. Depending on what shape the piping is toward the cab, you may get cabin heat from it. Good luck. If cabin heat is not needed or the heat exchangers are rotten, or the center pipe is rotten or plugged off (in my case with mouse nest) , you can take the fan out and free up some space under there.

  6. Mine came from Auz so had all this stripped out. If you go down the same route don't forget to blank off the risers from the heat exchangers or the engine will draw in hot air and overheat. I didn't realise for quite a few months. I used a beer can cut in half to plug them up.

  7. The squirrel fan was only for shifting a bit of heating air for a quick defrost when the engine's at low revs. Don't get obsessed with it.

The engine cooling fan supplies the heating air normally.
