Snapped suspension spring what a faff on

My dailys just failed the mot one of the items being a snapped suspension spring

The thing is my car is a so called sports model so the springs fitted are shorter than stock springs

I cant get the shorter springs from a motor factors or of ebay because the only do repros of the standard length springs not the sports ones
The sports ones are only available direct from vw at a cost of over £200 plus vat each

I could fit a pair of standard ones to the front but it would have a reverse rake and im not sure if my dampers will take the longer springs

If they would then im loooking about £100 to buy a pair of aftermarket springs

The thing is i can buy a full adjustable coil over kit of ebay for £160 posted

The other fails were a front lower suspension arm
These are a pain on the passats and audis and i seem to be changing at least one every mot
Also a brake light out which will be an easy fix

So apart from the suspension spring its not too bad

If i had the money for another car it would have been there a few years ago

 

i meant get a spring from the scrappy or buy a standard spring and cut it down

 

whatever you do dont go for cheap ebay "coiliovers" - they'll ride like Marmite and be knackered in no time.

try the forums - you'll prob find someone who's "upgraded" who has oem kit to sell for buttons? or a set of eibach springs (better quality than oe / ride better etc) are normally about 150 quid.

 

If you wanna be real cheap and the break isn't yo far from the end, just pull out the broken bit, job done, I've done it plenty of times

cutting a standard spring down would be an mot fail
Plus it would have a negative effect on the handling as its not just the length of the spring that matters

 

I just had my A3 rear spring replaced for £60 inc fitting and that's a sport model

 

Thats interesting to know and a good price indeed
The garage i use if im not doing the work myself charges £50 an hour labour
