This is a good point - now you mention it I never drive in the breakdown lane, it's not a smart thing to do - if I find myself there after getting onto a motorway I spend the entire time looking towards the horizon for trouble ahead.
Quite funny and quite right that people are learning to or intuitively leaving that lane for breakdowns. Power to the people.

The hard shoulder lane is usually the lane that collects all the Marmite and I reckon you're more likely to get a puncture in that lane.

The M42 between j9 and j3 has been a smart motorway for about 15 years and it seems to have the most congestion around here

That M42 is quite often equipped with a hard shoulder when I go along it - it seems that lane 1 gets closed quite often. The M42 is just full because its in the middle of England and nobody really wants to go to Birmingham but they all have to go round it.

Add rubbish matrix operators to that and you’re somewhere near the true picture. Honestly they close the hard shoulder when it’s busy then open it when there’s no need, they restrict the speed at each junction and I believe that causes more traffic than leaving it alone. I truly think the system could work at times but motorists just speed between junctions when the limit is lifted and the congestion just moves in fits and starts. If I operated the system I’d add a gap between cars as a prosecutable offence and keep the speed limit constant, it really doesn’t work well at all as it is and the inconsistent use of the hard shoulder as a lane is mind boggling.

  5. The eastbound inside lane of the M4 through Wiltshire was full of potholes for ages, I got to remember where some of them were (just before and just after the Membury Services slips) at night it was best to stay in the middle lane and put up with the irate drivers who flash/blind you then undertake you to 'teach you to use the inside lane at all times except when overtaking'......

I blame cruise control. Steadfastly sticking to 69 mph in the middle lane, refusing to adjust their speed to the traffic… seems particularly common amongst T4 owners that have gone to great lengths to retrofit it, so they must use it at all cost…

There seem to be quite a lot of motorists who are frightened of changing lanes and prefer to just follow the car in front.

  9. I found it more noticeable when i moved to 'That London' a few years ago , seems they just want to sit in their chosen lane regardless of traffic or road conditions. I do recall having a pop at the sister of Lady Lasty coming back from a night out , wrong side of midnight , zero traffic and she sat in the middle lane of the M3 at 55 mph for over an hour . One car came behind and tooted her as it pulled out from the inside , passed her and pulled back to the inside lane - she couldn't understand what she was doing wrong ....

I normally drive on the inside lane as there’s less traffic and you can see further up the road and just deal with the odd slow lorry/caravan
I leave the middle and outside lanes for those that like to drive nose to tail.

  11. Huh I didn't know you could retrofit cruise to a T4:thinking:

  14. I had a T4 with cruise control. In fact I also have a T2 with cruise control but I’m too scared to use it in case it decides to not uncruise control!

I hate Smart motorways and think they’re dangerous.

I also think that where the hard shoulder is now a Lane folk stick more in the 2nd lane as that would previously been the ‘slow’ lane. I’ve come to that conclusion quite recently after quite a bit of motorway driving and folk sat in a middle lane with nothing inside of them.

Agreed. The problem I find is that smart lanes tend to disappear particularly at busy junctions. This means that a slow vehicle needs to move over to the next lane with nose to tail lorries whizzing past at 60+. And then move back to the smart lane with lunatics whizzing past you on both sides.
