Small Crank Seal

Hi All, you may remember I had an oil leak evident between the rear of fan housing and front of engine. Any thoughts of these pics regarding small crank seal?

Flash light always shows oil at it’s worst.

To me, the seal looks old but dry. If this was the source of the issue I’d have expected more?

    Thanks

  2. Possibly but the seal itself looks dry, unlike mine which is leaking again
Could be the oring behind the fan spigot.

Well you may as well change it now and see what happens .

Do you have to have a hub puller to get that hub off?

    No.
That’s the back of the engine and it doesn’t look like the rear seal is leaking but oil could get there from the cooler, oil pump, pressure switch or distributor or the o- ring might be missing from the fan hub. Check the dipstick bellows too.

Cheers, the oil cooler looks nice and clean. I’m battling with bellows at the moment, got some new ones on the way.

To me it looks like its running down to the left hand side of the engine, not from the crank oil seal. Judging from oil pools and drips on the outside of the gallery plugs, where it looks like it is dribbling down past the area shown in your picture.

The oil cooler is on the left of the engine, Breather box above.

  8. Sorry to jump in but I'm right at changing the seal, is there a way of changing it with out a hub puller 20200601_124420.jpg

The oil cooler look nice and dry when I had the fan off, and also from underneath.

Re the Breather Box - not sure I have one of these, see pic (T25 dipstick is redundant by the way!!!)

Yes, remove the bolt from the centre of the hub, then jack the hub off using the fan mounting bolts – put a packer between the bolts and the crankcase.

With the crankcase split? This may end in tears...

Two of the hub bolts will fit, it should work but it’s not how I would have done it. And if it doesn’t, he’ll have to drop the other half of the case back on and fit the flywheel – and then the trouble will start with bearing alignment. He could just hit it with a hammer of course.

  13. I was changing the cam bearing when you said about packing I realised the case needed to be together but it was a massive help so thank you
