Small Butane Gas Cookers....

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by bryandsi, Mar 12, 2012.

  1. Hi all
Is anyone using those small butane cannister powered gas cookers in their van rather than a built in unit?

Looking at them some say Outdoor use only, some indoor and outdoor ....how long does a cannister last, any ideas??
    Cheers

  2. I have a built in cooker and a larger camping cooker and gas bbq, but for tea or just a night away I use these. You can get about 2 breakfasts and 4 kettles out of a can. Saves all the faff. Asda, £5. Cans don't like extreme cold though

Top tip - put any unused boiled water straight in a coffee flask then reboil it when needed - saves tonnes of gas
    :)

  3. We take one to Glasto every year and they are great as they are just so portable. Agree with Joker, they will last a few cooks and a few kettles. We get through about 5 cans in a week at Glasto...

  4. really good as they are compact and work quite well. as said the gas can freeze but i just keep spare cans inside a bag in the van not in the awning.
the gas is about a quid a can and available at most camp sites / show grounds if you do run out
i dont cook in the bus but as long as you dont knock it over and open a window a bit then they are fine.
i also use one of the little heaters that run of the cans

  5. I have a single ring butane cooker - used it every year at Leeds festy until they banned gas cannisters. One cannister used to cover three days breakfasts and a couple of cuppas. Best to buy from ebay if the P&P is low or QDs (£9.99 I think) - they're upwards of £15 in Argos.

We have the two rings in the van but do 95% of the cooking on this

It comes in hi pressure canester or low pressure bottle gas.

It folds up and packs away in its own bag.

we,ve even used it on the docks waiting for the late ferry while it was a gale outside and watching the poor sods in their cars with sandwiches.

  9. Me likey! I've just googled it and there are quite a few different models.

What functions / features do you use and what ones are pointless.

Griddle is the only one we hardly ever use.

To trun it into an oven as the wok lid does not seal we line with tinfoil and bake fish or other stuff.

This is a low level model others or on a stem so you dont have to bend or have on a table.
I tend to relax in a camping chair and get on with it sat on the grass next to me.

  11. I'm now wondering if I change my interior plans again and forget about the job and just create a cupboard to fit this.

It fits the bill of completely portable and doesn't take up much valuable room. What size is it roughly when in its bag?

off the top me head i'd say its about 14" x 14" x 9" ish will measure in the morrow

  13. If you get one of the portables make sure you buy one with a CE mark printed on it or the packaging
Not on a sticker, as this is unlikely to be officially tested, stickers mean no one can be held responsible

  14. So here's a question. Do you reckon you could somehow seat that cadac within a unit on the bus so that it could act as a hob and then if the weather is ok take it out and then use as a BBQ?

  15. you can a metal toaster that stands on topaswell. From all good camping shops :) about £4

  16. Cheers all - reckon I'll go for a double burner one of these for now with a BBQ thrown in !
Means we don't have to make a decsion on "built in" this Spring - if it all works well, cash saved - great!!

Sorry i forgot about the measuring but I've got a nasty stomach virus and it stop me eating and that's like a fish out of water for me.

WILL measure in the next morrow.

  19. Dont worry mate, I think I'm going to get one anyway. Could it be mounted in a unit and used, (does te base get hot etc), and then taken out and used outside if need be?
