slowly being gassed....

  1. ive got exhaust fumes enterring the cab so suspect the heat exchangers are knackered.

    few questions...

how easy are they to change on a type4 2.0 motor?
can they be done in situ or is it an engine out job?

can one side be disconnected short term or does this lead to an imbalance in the running temperature of the cylinder banks and rough running?
    Cheers

yes they're easy to do providing the studs/nuts to the head aren't siezed, you don't need to take the engine out, i'm not sure what you mean about running one only? have you got a j-tube to replace it? you'll need some new copper seals for the heads when you change them.

You can disconnect either of both.
If oil is dripping onto (and therefore into) the heat exchanger, the problem is an oil leak (push-rod seals or rocker cover gasket) and fitting a new HX will not help.
You can remove any/all exhasut parts without removing the engine.

  4. Agree with Zed, and why would'nt I? My problem was same. Heat exchangers rusted through, rockers tubes leaking and, although not above the HXs I needed new crankshaft seals. The last is an engine out job but although I fitted the HXs when it was out one had a miss-placed copper seal so has to come out again when the engine was in. I found it was EASIER to do with the engine IN.
Word of warning - pattern heat exchangers are, (a) very expensive, and (b) absolutely rubbish, leak like a collander. I spent 2 hours making mine reasonably airtight.

  5. Just had mine off, they are quite easy and if you want to disconnect them here are some ideas :-

1, take the wire off the lever arm on the heat exchanger, should be on the side. If the spring still works should let the heat exchanger dump all air overboard.

2, There should be rubber boot on either side. These should be able to pull off the heat exchanger. (be carefull if they are old however as have a rubber or maybe asbestos if never changed before seal inside)

Hope this is of some help
