Sliding window fitting problem

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by O Gorman, Oct 24, 2012.

  1. Hi I have a sliding window that came out of a 78 Devon.
Now after 2 new rubbers and plenty of pain I still can't get it to go in the rubber is the right one as I've double checked it looks as if its slightly to big but the measurements say diferant I know they are tater tight I've used grease the rope method

    I'm stuck!

  2. I've just fitted one of mine and they are a pain!!! very tight fitting in the appature

no easy way of doing it that I know of

just have to persevere, lots of lubrication around the seal and lip on the window and use tough string/cord.

I thumped it in as much as I could, then hit the bottom in enough so I could get the seal over the lip, then worked up the sides and finished along the top.

They take a hell of a lot of hitting to get them in!!

once the seal was over the lip it probably still wont sit right, so I went around the frame, hitting it with a block of wood and hammer to get it to seat right..........and it still needs a bit of tweeking!!

    hope that has helped

    good luck mate :)

diddy, is this the ones for the sliding door? if so microbus or panelvan conversion? as you know i've bought one but no idea if it has/needs a seal, i assumed i remove the westy window and this fits in with rivets or screws, certainly not seen a rubber in the pictures i got off the seller, the westy louvre windows look like they screw in, anyone confirm?

from the ones we have the westy louvres screw in, as you say but the slider fits in with the seal over the flanged lip, as per the windscreen method. Our slider has the seal with it (it is bnib tho)

cheers diddy - i saw it on your resto thread last night, look like a tight fit - do they go in with string method then or?

  18. yes, use thick cord and lots of lube ;D........I was using thin string, but it cut into the seal in a few places :(

I found it takes a lot of hammering to get it to sit against the seal lip...........then lots more banging in the same area as you are pulling the cord out to get it to sit further back over the seal lip

lube all round the window opening and the seal lip

we used sun screen as lube :)

once the seal is over the lip, a bit more hammering should settle it back even more into in the right place
