Sliding Door Replacement Cable?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Dpoints, Nov 4, 2023.

  1. Hi all, I have a 1973 late bay. I'm having troubles opening and closing the sliding door. It would appear that the barrel adjuster has snapped in half meaning I am unable to lengthen / shorten the cable to open the door from the outside.
Is it possible to buy a replacement barrel (I cannot find one) or a complete new cable (again, I am unable to find one). Any pearls of wisdom would be appreciated.
    Thanks

First off, it's not an adjuster, it just joins the two parts, so you could tap a piece of tubing. When I say it's not an adjuster, it kind of is by trial and error screwing one end on however much before feeding the other end in, but it's same thread all the way through not RH/LH.

  4. Thanks guys, I am also struggling with the opposite end of the wire - it seems the end of the cable shroud has perished and I have lost the retainer that prevents the cable from being pulled into the mechanism. When I try and open the door, the cable shroud goes through the metal housing and will not open the door. thanks

Look in a bike shop or motor bike shop for bowden cables and the end pieces.

  6. Can you adapt a standard Bowden cable to suit?
