Sliding door mech adjustment

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Clipper2bay, Jul 13, 2018.

  1. Hi all, can anyone point me to a guide to adjusting the sliding door mechanism please? I replaced it recently, and now the door won't latch unless I slam it shut, or push in at the back as it closes. I worried something's going to break.

    Cheers

There are 4 bolts that attach the hinge to the door. You can loosen these and then move the hinge forward or backward as needed.

You bring it to Techenders and @davidoft stares hard at it from a distance. It fixes itself.
Not really, there is a procedure I think on Ratwell.com. but also inside the door there is an adjuster that alters the preload on closing the rear lock.

I thought you always had to slam it shut.

How else are you to wake everyone up at four in the morning when you nip out for a jimmy?

  5. Mine latches perfectly :D

Only problem is there's a 1cm gap at the top rear. I found it in a Provence thunder storm when I put my foot onto a flooded floor!!

    Which bolts fix that??

The top of the door is guided by the roller at the top which can be loosened and let the top of the door move in and out a bit. The rest of the gap at the top rear will be from moving the roller at the bottom front in and out.

The door is supported by rollers at the front top and bottom and the lock half way up the rear. The lock at the rear is a modern double safety locking catch - it needs to go to the second position, using the handle pull up to pull it from first to second position if its an older door.

If it doesnt adjust enough your door may be the victim of a wonky restoration amd the only way forward may be to remove the glass and bend the door ... or remove the bodge and re-restore the door.

I think its quite hard to get such a big gap without there being a deep problem.

Get some clothes pegs and clip carrier bags to the gutter.
