  1. Quite probably. The slate was such bad quality it was no use for roofing only as a building stone.

  3. HMS Vernon was also home to the scary underwater escape training tower. In the shed at the top there was a mock-up of a helicopter fuselage into which you were strapped in and them the unit was fully immersed and once the water had finished rushing in you were allowed to unstrap and egress, following the bubbles. 1st run easy, 2nd run upside down, more difficult, 3rd run upside down and no lights, quite scary, 4 run on the side, dark and you were in the lower seat and had to wait for the other pilot to go, not a lot of fun. 5th run similar but in the back and you had to follow someone else through a small window in the side door, no fun at all. Whilst we "airy fairies" were congratulating ourselves the safety divers regaled us with stories of submariners doing escape training; they were released from a submerged pod at the base of the tower and had to ascend a huge distance, exhaling as they went so as not to explode their lungs, and the safety divers were there to help at various depths by punching them in the ribs if they were not following the drill!! Happy days in the Andrew

  10. I remember doing that at Yeovil, as long as you didn't panic and followed the instructions I remember it being pretty straightforward. Happy days indeed.

I used to like Vernon as you could catch a PAS boat round the dockyards from there, beat the paid for boat trips.

  14. I think I would be so disorientated doing that, I’d drown :(. I like things the right way up. And not underwater.

  15. Q: What's hot on the outside but cool in the middle?

A: A nicely running Volksie engine :). A blast along the country lanes, almost 30* in the shade, oil stayed well below below 90*, CHT 115*, peaked at <150*
