Just different types of birch, depending on where I got the graft wood.... variations that were once a freak of nature and were then propagated on and on to become a recognised variety. Types that won’t grow ‘true’ from seed.
Roses are the things that most people recognise, and take for granted, as being grafted. But you can do it with most plants. Trees certainly are largely propagated in this way, either by grafting in the late winter, or ‘budding’ in the summer.
I think most people in horticulture have secretly dreamed of finding an ‘anomaly’ on a particular plant / tree, propagating it on through a few generations, and having it named after themselves. One of my work colleagues found a ‘white beam’ (Sorbus aria type) with a brilliant yellow stripe on its leaf. We propagated it, and whilst the yellow stripe did remain, it burnt up in bright sunlight! Completely useless!!
I discovered a flowering crab apple that produced long lobed leaves like an oak, and got all excited about the prospect of a Malus hopa ‘hastedii’ but the damned thing reverted to proper leaf type at the third generation stage. Hey ho, my search for immortality goes on!

  3. That's seriously cool stuff, I could have an anomaly outside my front door, for all I know, I wouldn't even have the knowledge to see it! Good luck in your hunt for a 'hastedii'!

  4. Now I can read the words but I don't know what language it's in, do you know any fart jokes, them I mostly understand.
I wish I was clever, or edumicatedly. I have a feeling I could kill a plastic Cactus.

@SeanOC Mostly Birch, a few fancy beech, liquidambars (sweetgum), plus a few other odds: pears, plums, etc. Not that much this year as the boss is doing a viability study to see whether it is actually worth my time. No pressure then!

  13. The idea of grafting has always fascinated me. Probably daft to you as you can do it but just a bit of magic to me...

  15. That`s about as good as they get , one of the most hideous donkeys ever to hit the road .

Wife of a workmate wasn`t clever enough to manage 3 pedals so he forked out a fortune on the apparently rare auto verion . They thought it looked well cool ....
True to form it was written off within the month , she of course blamed the car but he found another , with predictable results - i do know some idiots ....

  17. Yes, a bloke I worked with had one for years.

He never said why and we never asked why.

It’s pretty much my favourite part of my working year, that and the summer ‘budding’ ( another form of grafting done in the fields rather than at a bench). Oh and training Apple and Pear trees to make them espaliers.
Fingers crossed for a successful year!
