Should we claim for fire damage on our insurance?

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by hippyrichy, Oct 3, 2011.

  1. The facts:

We have classic insurance with fire as part of the cover.

Very few companies will insure us due to it being parked on the road and the area we live.

We know the present issues but want to hear it through your opinions.
    What would you do?

  2. i'd get a quote for the work first and then decide whether its better to pay the premium and do it on the insurance co - or cover the costs and keep your insurance low in the future?

  3. What's the damage ?

  5. Mainly hoses that will need replacing & one carb is looking singed

To be honest - we're not sure of the full extent but it doesn't look too bad at the moment.

I'd go through the insurance personally. Thats what you pay them for. (unless of course its a really small cost)

I'd avoid the insurance claim. It's your only vehicle etc etc and they will sting you next year.

  9. You should claim. That's what you pay your premiums for. Just a 'small' amount of work still costs on labour.

  11. I'm in the same boat as you, live in West London parked on street and most insurance companies wouldnt touch mine. For me it's more important to make the bus legal on the road. Sounds like you caught it quick and you have the winter to sort it.
Maybe there's some discreet way of finding out how insurance companies handle this. What about our sponsors?

  12. I had this when I asked if I could alter my cover on my bug to leave it on the street they said I would nt be covered so I said what if I leave it on the street and accept it's not covered for theft they said by leaving it on the street I would not be covered full stop so if some one hit on the street I still wouldn't be covered and the best about it when it's on the drive it a metre away from the curb there no gates on the drive or anything can't even park it on my front lawn cos that's private land not a driveway it's pants

  13. dont get me started ......they will kill you next year on your insurance .....car insurance is under investigation at mo in this country due to price fixing ........

  15. I'd fix it myself and not tell the insewerance anything. Like peeps say they will get their pound of flesh of you next year. Plus as my wife Sam says...READ THE SMALL PRINT...you'd be surprised to what extents they will go to not pay out. (She works in insewerance). Also what is your excess? If it costs £600 and your excess is £500 its hardly worth claiming.

I think insewerance is for larger claims myself and small ones you just have to hold your hands up and do it yourself. I know some will say that what you pay them for. But thats not helpful, even though its true but insewerance is legalised fraud anyway. The last thing you need is to be refused insewerance in the future and have an uninsured bus on the stret.

  16. yes it does increase your premium .. ........if you claim 900 quid worth of damage ,then insurer will put at least half of that on top for next year .....i had bad crash 4 years ago now ........i claimed ......then i see my insurance go up from 500quid to nearly a grand ........this has happended to nearly everyone i know that drives whatever the jam jar or bus

  17. i always fix myself now ....whs ^is da truth

  20. you can get the insurers to sort it all out for you then repay them the cost of repair and it wont affect you next year
