It seems somthings gone wrong with the vw evolution program and things have passed there peak http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=fvwp&v=C8C526ANYT4&NR=1
When your on slippy terrain in a four wheel drive the vehicle not only moves forward but goes side to side a fair bit aswell I dont think he was centred enough on the track and as it pulled to the right hand side he slid down the bank
my landy could have pulled that out in two minutes...My T25 got stuck in a ditch in the garden ,I would not dream of going anywhere slightly boggy/snowy with it ,they are useless...
Hand recovering it must have been a PITA. The syncro t25s are pretty capable off road plus some have twin diff locks. Just the lack of torque that spoils it. You could add a better engine but then you need to spend a couple of grand on a gearbox that could survive it. The land rover 300tdi engine makes 2.5x the torque of the VW td unit at 1/2 the revs from an engine thats just 45% bigger capacity.
I've been along gap road and blown bridge in a land rover and it struggled more than this. Syncro just needs more axle travel as its real easy to run out of articulation. If you could get this sort of articulation, a stonger gearbox, space for bigger tyres and more torque a syncro would be nearly unstoppable IMO. The t4 went back to torsion bars on the front, with the T5 going back to springs.
Would of been ok with decent tyres Having had a T25 syncro pick up with both diff locks and a 1.9TD conversion i can safely say they will go further than a standard landrover. I only got the syncro stuck 3 times in as many years, 2 took a tractor to get it out the 3rd took a 20 ton winch on a 6x6 scammel That was proper stuck, i couldnt evan open the treasure chests to get my tow rope and the ground was that bad i sunk to near my knees getting a strop on These new things are no good, old school is best
Spot on Im a massive landy fan and even though syncros have less torque they really do punch well above there weight
It looks nice but id struggle to get it down some of the single track lanes round here And that overhang behind the rear wheels makes for a really poor departure angle
Ha ha youve just described a unimog It maybe my eyesight with that landy pic i cant see any spring retaining discloaction straps or cones on the suspension Cheers for the posts zeb i really appreciate how you always find something interesting to drop into a 4wd thread
Any piccies? Once had a scammel explorer sunk to above the tops of the wheels in mud on a play day in a quarry. That took a wee bit of pulling to get out. Its winch pulled two other ex army trucks (a bedford RL and a stalwart) towards it instead of pulling itself out. Heres something that should have been built, the Noriker LT. Only a few were made using the unimog portal axles. From the people who brought you the syncro, mercedes G wagen, haflinger and pinzgauer and unimog. Mad, but oh so cool, a 4wd LT expedition camper built in the UK by syncro nuts: Build piccies here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/14602120@N03/sets/72157622647138086/detail/
Another cool unimog axled LT build. The volksmogen: http://www.hasenwerk.ca/1993lt4x4/ LTs are still pretty cheap but the unimog axles are over a grand a pop. Gonna end up restoring an LT for a mate at some point this year after he has found the T25 i did for him to be too small for his needs. As finding a 4wd LT cheap in the UK is hard but they are available in Germany for a decent price still, a little road trip might be in order.
