Glastonbury used to be my favourite festival. Since being taken on by Mean Fiddler its become a commericalised nightmare in my opinion.
Its ok if you like being surrounded by loads of privately educated teens called Millie!

You're right, most other festivals are even more commercialised than Glastonbury.
Its just a shame that Mean Fiddler bought it down to other's levels.
I'm not a Glastonbury veteran by any means but I went every year it happened from the age of 15 until about 30; it has changed massively, but not for the better.

  5. In what way do you think it's commercialised? Granted it's very different from my first time there with about 30,000 watching Hugh Masakela and Echo and the Bunnymen - and you don't really get some of the more unsavoury types there anymore but having hells angels threatening to burn your tent down at 4am or having them pinning you to the floor and slitting your face with a stanley knife because you were undercutting them on the price of cans of Miller Lite is not something I particularly relished. The media profile now is massive, back in 1985 the music papers covered it but The Times coverage amounted to a few word saying how many had been arrested at "pilton pop festival"

I know its always been about the money in reality, but Michael Eavis used to do a good job of pointing out how Glastonbury was more about the local community than some massive company turning a profit. I know Mean Fiddler were bought in as a means to an ends (no Mean Fiddler = no licence) but I think the whole dynamic changed almost overnight.
You no longer hear the stories of what good its bought to the community.

  8. I've been going since the eighties and the changes I've seen have been massive - for the better and the worse. It is a totally safe environment now, which obviously is a good thing. However, the cost of this is its edge - its edge was what gave it its element of excitement in the old days.
There was a time when you could liken it to a gathering of the tribes - hippies, punks, goths, bikers and anyone else that hung around on the fringes of society. Now, it is all over the telly - it has become very mainstream and no longer a secret hideaway for weirdos.

But when all is said and done - it is still the best weekend you can have with your clothes on...............or off!!!

You've been lucky then (as have I) because its as rife now as its always been. The thieves just have to stump up for a ticket now.

See I had a different impression. I thought most of them did have the festival spirit, it was the minority scallies that caused the problems.

  15. Anyway ... the post was about how it would normally be on this year ... I miss it not being on - but am grateful its not as I would not have been able to go.

I'll be back next year ....

I'm sure your google search results are correct; but my point was that since Eavis lost control, "giving back" is not seen as a selling point for Glastonbury any more. Mean Fiddler are just a faceless money generating company.

  17. It still goes on though, without being a selling point - that's a good thing.

I disagree. Nothing wrong with blowing your own trumpet.
