Short circuit:

  1. Hi guys,

I think I have been a tad optimistic when saying my bus was fine. I though somebody here may be able to help me do a bit of guessing work.

Here are the symptoms, engine won't start. I have battery (when I turn the key everything lights up properly) but everything shut off when I press the starter.
Van was running fine yesterday (took us home without any warning) and would not start this evening when I tried to park it up on a better spot.

My guess would be a cable that went loose on the starter creating a short circuit.
    Any other leads?

Beer at the techenders to the one who get it right. (if I make it)

  2. Check starter leads and Earth strap on gearbox and battery.

Are you sure the battery is ok, a nearly flat battery will light the lights but not budge the starter, do you get any kind of click when you turn the key?

  4. Battery was changed recently (but could be faulty if alternator is broken didn't test it yet)
Got some noise when turning the key yes.

Just a process of elimination, multi tester check what the battery is showing then as said work through the main connections waggling and tightening each one. Earths, battery leads, starter connetions then move on to ignition wires, bridging the solenoid on the starter etc

  6. That was my first guess as well. Didn't know where the lead was and it was dark. Will do tomorrow.

  7. Covering all the options to be sure to get the beer. Smart move! ;)

I'm sure there's more, maybe the engines seized :p

  9. Do you have a starter button, or do you mean when you turn the key to start?
...because a faulty ignition switch can give the symptoms you describe - but I'd check the battery first.
Measure the battery voltage with the ignition off, then turn on the ignition and headlights and measure again. It shouldn't drop by much (say from 12.6V to 12.4V).

  10. Yes there is a starter button in my van and it trips the electrical system.

After intensive checking it's a faulty wiring somewhere on the starter. If we override it, the van can be started.
Bad news is I won't have time to fix that before the weekend. Meaning that I won't be able to make it to the techenders... :(

Thanks guys for all the tips.
