Servo and master cylinders

  1. Has anybody any experience of fitting non-standard brake servos and or master cylinders?

If so what did you fit? Did you have any problems? And have you resolved them?

Why go non-standard? This is just what I'm gathering bits for right now.

Last week on Ebay I bought a second hand std servo complete with the pedal rod, the master cylinder, switches, vacuum non-return valve and brake fluid reservoir all for the princely sum of £44 delivered.

A chatter on EB is chopping me a bracket from an old beam as we speak. Then All I'll need to do is mock it up and weld the bracket to the beam, re-route two brake pipes and fit vacuum pipe and non-return valve back to the balance pipe in the engine bay. If this costs me much more than £100 in total including the ebay servo I'll be disappointed. I'm aiming for £75.

The standard servo halves the braking force needed. That doesn't sound like much of an improvement but it makes the world of difference to your driving confidence!

  3. I too have been looking for many months and either just miss out or they are too expensive but, there are hundreds of vw servos on ebay for polos, golfs and bigger vehicles that are very cheap, just really wondered if anybody had tried something else.

I must have hit lucky. I've had my eye out for a year, but only sporadically and I just happened to spot it.

The beauty of the bus system is that it was designed for it and it's easy to fit. I honestly think if there was an easy cheap solution I'd have read about it, but you never know...

  5. Can you use any T2 servo and master cylinder i.e. one system fits all.

We have a 1979 van that originally had a servo, still got the bracket but no servo. i wasn't to sure if i had to get a specific year of servo unit. They come up on ebay quite often

  6. I would like to upgrade to servo brakes on our van - where exactly would I graft in the vacuum pipe - I assume it would need to go into the inlet manifold somehwere but I haven't seen the engine of a servo fitted van so I can't work it out. A photo would be great.
