  1. I have noticed a slight leak on the selector shaft seal on my gearbox, has anyone had to change there's cos I wondered if I could do it without dismantling that end of the gearbox? (The gearbox is out of the bus)

It's a standard rotating shaft seal so you'd have to puncture it and prise it out. Often they wear with the bushes inside the nosecone. If the selector shaft feels loose, jk sell a kit with bushes and a new seal. Too much lateral play and the seal will wear more quickly.

Stand the gearbox on end, unbolt the nosecone and pull it off. Replace bushes and seal, inspect hockey stick (selector) shaft for wear. On the end of the hockey stick is a plastic ball. Actually the shaft will be in your hand as it falls out when you draw the nosecone off. In a socket on the selector lever is a plastic ball. When they're worn or broken it adds a lot of play to the gear selection. Plug the hockey stick back in the ball and have a play. Also inspect the socket the ball fits in, the metal is quite thin around the socket and may be cracked. Have a play with the selector lever selecting gears. Next time you're searching for a gear you'll have a mental picture of a bit more of the selecting process. :)

If the drive shafts leak as well, the seals are also easy to replace while the box is out.

From time to time, check under the end you stood it on (on a couple of blocks of wood) for oil leaking out of the input shaft seal. If the seal is good zero oil should leak out even after a day or two. Gearbox oil is smelly.
