Seat foams

  1. Hi all, boring title i know!

I am going to be refurbishing my late Westy interior and giving some much needed TLC. I'm wondering what type of foam or filling to use on the rock and roll bed and the pop-top bed to make it more comfortable (my other half insists that the current spongy foam isn't comfortable enough). What have other people used as a replacement? How have you found it?

I'll be re-covering them with Westy cloth and its a '75, what would people recommend?

Your help will be much appreciated! Matt.

  2. 4 inch foam sandwich , lower 2" blue firm foam , upper 2" memory foam - as good as it gets

I think they came from Bluebird Customs and weren`t cheap but AMAZINGLY comfortable :D:D

  3. Thanks :) I'll check it out. Is it a hard wearing foam? I would want it to last quite a while!

  4. Been in about 6-7 years now , still brilliant - i can`t recommend it highly enough :D

  5. Dfficult One. Everyones preferences differ, practicality dictates what you can have and on westys in particular the bed cusions arent even the same depth. Once youve bought , fitted and covered you are into serious money and if you dont like it then you have a dilema

I have this, though from a different supplier and it's way to soft for me. Thinking of binning it and starting again. :(

  7. Why not speak to someone that supplies foam for real beds and not just a camper specialist. Just a thought!

  8. Foams are colour coded blue - firm, grey - medium & green soft. these each have 3 levels of firmness. You can get memory foam toppers grafted (glued) to other foams but they are really expensive. 4" is the norm but the choice is yours. I have made buddy box seats in 7" foams. Also they are bulky so delivery is not cheap either.

Reckon I must have a soft grade of blue then as mine is far from firm. Why are these things so complicated. As you say, not cheap with 2" memory foam grafted on top.

  10. A lot of foam suppliers will ask if you have an account then will politely ask you to proove you are in the upholstery business by sending a copy invoice or receipt for other upholstery products bought from reputable suppliers. Bed foams are quite thin as most ordinary beds rely on springs or slats for comfort. the foam/hessian/quilted top fabric is only for smoothing purposes (so the springs don't dig into you in the night) Rock & Roll camper beds have no springs & therefore rely on thicker foam for comfort.

  11. I use firm grade blue in all my beds. If covered in vinyl you hardly make a dent when led on them & can't push through to the bottom with your hand. Memory foam is ok but has no real advantage when vinyl wrapped. You would however be able to notice the difference with 'softer' fabrics. not worth the expense imo.

The memory foanm is very comfortable with no cover, I see what you mean. I can squash the whole thing easily from 4" to 1/2" between my finger and thumb. Think it's got to go.

  13. Is this a blue foam you can squash easily? How long have you had it? Foam does eventually degrade & lose it's properties.

    It's almost new 2" blue 2" memory.

  15. Ah well there lies your problem. 2" is not really thick enough to support any real weight and memory foam is designed to be soft but return to original shape. You may be better ditching just the 2" blue & replacing with at least 3". Keep the memory foam as it is comfy & expensive. Either that or knock the whole thing out on ebay??

  16. Havent spent overly long sleeping in mine but did manage a couple of weeks when i first did it. The main cusion was an original one from an 80s camper which i had already used previously. When matched up it was the grey stuff that was nearest. 4 inch and then wadding and dacron when i fitted it and it needed filling out just that bit. Its been ok and im a big fellow. That said i also usually have a duvet underneath me too. Thats more about keeping warm but it makes the gaps up.

Anyway. As i say its a difficult choice. Incidentally my supplier is Tonytex in Nottingham market. He sells to the public but i dont know wht his full range is!

  17. I got proper fire retardant foam from Newton and Commercial. I don't know what colour it is but it's comfortable.

  18. Not sure how easy it would be to cut up / work with but we got a new "10" 65KG/M3 HIGH DENSITY MEMORY FOAM HIGH DENSITY ORTHOPAEDIC REFLEX FOAM" King Size mattress for our home bed for just over £130 delivered off an Ebay seller and it's so much better than our old pocket sprung thing. I imagine giving such ebay sellers the required dimensions they would easily beat the quotes of some of the VW suppliers.

  19. Thanks for the help everyone :) I even learned some new stuff about foam! Every day is a school day
