Seat covers are rather expensive

  1. Has anyone sewn their own seat/bed cushion covers? My ones in the camper are the original Devon ones and are getting a bit tatty, so I asked for a few quotes. 4x plain vinyl cushions with 4" foam... Newton Commercial wanted £1,100 (!) and 2 other vw camper upholsterers quoted around £550. All were 2-3 months waiting time.

Now I know they are custom sizes but isn't that quite a lot? I'm now thinking about making my own covers and zipping them over the old cushions as the foam isn't bad it's just the edges which are frayed and the fabric which is stained. Anyone done this or got any other ideas? :)

I've always been surprised how expensive upholstery is but then I guess it is a skilled job to get it looking right!
There's a company in Exeter who are cheap, think they're called Pluss. They're a charity hence their prices.

  3. Check your foam. A couple of different types were used and some crumble with age and arent worth saving. That said I think the stuff that does last (possibly polyurathene) is good for a long time. Ive got a mixture of foam on mine as I went from 3/4 to full width but my local foam chap matched it up and im quite pleased. If you want vinyl then you will pay more than fabric. Im not keen on it so went for removeable zipped covers in fabric. Not as hard wearing but comfier, not sweaty and they can go in the washing machine. Mine werent cheap though. About £350 I think. I spent another 30 quid or so on stockinette, dacron and glue, replaced a foam which was about another 30 quid so it wasnt cheap.

  4. Good point about the sweatiness of vinyl. I hadn't thought about that. Perhaps I could just take the existing cushions to an upholsterer to be repaired and cleaned up...

  5. I'll look them up :)

  6. Keep it local and shop around if thats your plan. Its worth the ask! I found a few people that could do it. By far the cheapest would be loose covers over your existing but personally I would freshen them up if the foams are good. If you think youd like to remove the covers to clean then good quality zips on the covers and stockinette on the foam so they slide in amd out.

  7. Forgot to say - if they are standard Devon I assume its 3/4 3 piece set. Its actually quite basic as standard and should be pretty cheap to get done. If your going patterned though and they dont line up it can look pooh!

  8. I've done my own door cards and front seat covers. Both are really straight forward.
Haven't done rnr bed yet but I imagine if you took your old ones apart carefully. Used them as templates for new material then just sew'd it together.. Job done :).

Where did you have that done?
That can't be more than a couple of hours labour per seat??

  11. Very nice!

  12. Mine's 4 separate cushions - 2 rows of seats made up of 2 backs and 2 bottoms. Nothing complicated!

    I suppose I have a few options:
    - leave it as it is with a few nicks and tears here and there (will need replacing eventually)
    - turn the covers over to expose the vinyl side (but this means I'll have to unpin the flap which holds the seat in place and swap it to the other side. Also as above, will still be a little worn)
    - cover existing cushions with new zipped covers
    - totally new cushions

  13. Very smart and at a great price too!

I need my 3/4 rock n roll cushions covered in vinyl. I have the 3 new foam cushions and the vinyl and have been quoted £500 + VAT for the labour to cover them! Think I will be learning how to sew as money is tight at the moment.

  15. I was £175 getting the smaller bench & backrest made to match my R&R bed.

Not too bad considering it's all ribbed
