Best way to catch anyone trying to sell something that isn't actually theirs is to ask to see it. If a seller says no then you jog on. It really isn't very difficult. Sadly however people get caught up and proceed to pay on full of deposits. When it happens you do sometimes ask yourself how stupid can people be?? After all you wouldn't pay a deposit on a bar of chocolate so why anything else??
